CGLT board members help Spencer and Leicester's Envirothon teams. Envirothon is a high school program where students engage in hands-on, investigative learning on environmental issues. Teams from across the state meet for the Envirothon competition held in May.
Mid-State Trail Conservation Partnership
2012: Sibley Farm in Spencer was our first major project as a land trust, working with Greater Worcester Land Trust (GWLT), Mass Audubon, and the Town of Spencer to raise $2.9 million to protect 351 acres of farm fields, forest and wetlands for conservation and agriculture.
Sibley Farm is owned by Greater Worcester Land Trust (GWLT). An Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) on 81 acres of farm fields means that those acres are permanently restricted to commercial agricultural use only. CGLT co-owns (along with the Town of Spencer, MA) the Conservation Restriction (CR) on the non-APR 271 acres of Sibley Farm. This CR permanently restricts these acres from development. As owner of the CR, CGLT is responsible for monitoring the property and its boundaries each year, and our members actively volunteer for trail projects and invasive weed management projects organized by GWLT.
Have you seen these signs up in Leicester? They are coming soon to Spencer, too! Thanks to a grant from the Leicester Savings Bank, we purchased these signs to hang with the new river crossing signs in our towns, to raise awareness of the many waters flowing through our area.
The Mid-State Trail runs through Spencer and Leicester on its route from Rhode Island to NH. CGLT is a member of the Mid-State Trail Conservation Partnership, a new collaboration between local communities, land trusts, trail groups, planning boards, and conservation commissions working together to preserve land and access for the Midstate Trail.
